Payday Loan and Loan App Debt Help in Kochi: Settlement, Harassment and Your Options

Updated: 4 days ago
From IT professionals in Kakkanad to traders in Broadway, nurses preparing to move abroad and families in Aluva and Tripunithura, many people in and around Kochi have turned to instant loan apps when money ran short. Some of these loans were small and quick to repay. Others grew into a stack of overdue apps, constant calls and messages to friends and relatives. If you are searching for payday loan and loan app debt help in Kochi, this guide explains your rights, how to report harassment in Kerala, how to check whether your lender is genuine, and how to work towards a settlement or repayment plan you can live with.

How loan app debt builds up for Kochi borrowers
The pattern is similar across Ernakulam district:
A small first loan. Often taken for rent, a medical bill, school fees or a family function.
A short repayment window. Many app loans must be repaid within weeks.
A second and third app. Borrowers take new loans to repay the first, and the charges multiply.
Pressure tactics. Some apps, especially unregulated ones, start calling contacts or sending threatening messages as soon as a payment is late.
Kerala has seen serious concern about illegal loan apps, and Kerala Police has repeatedly warned the public against fake and unauthorised lending apps. Knowing your rights is the first step to taking back control.
Your rights when dealing with loan apps in Kerala
The same RBI rules apply in Kochi as anywhere else in India. If your loan is from a bank or an RBI-registered NBFC, or an app working with one:
No harassment. Threats, abusive language, intimidation and public shaming are not allowed in recovery.
Reasonable calling hours. RBI's rules limit recovery calls to between 8 am and 7 pm.
Protection of your phone data. Regulated digital lending apps should not access your contact list, call logs or media files.
Transparent charges. You should have received a Key Fact Statement (KFS) showing the full cost, and late-payment penalties must be charged as disclosed penal charges.
A complaint route. Every regulated lender must have a grievance officer, and you can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman.
If an app has accessed your contacts or gallery, our guide on loan apps asking for contacts or photos and your data privacy rights explains what to do.
Step 1: Check whether your loan app is genuine
Open your loan agreement or KFS and find the name of the actual lender. Then check whether the app appears in RBI's directory of digital lending apps, which RBI has published on its website since 1 July 2025. If no regulated lender is named, or the app is not in the directory, treat it as unregulated. Our RBI approved loan app checklist walks you through it.
Step 2: Report harassment in Kerala
Kerala Police WhatsApp number for loan app complaints
In September 2023, Kerala Police announced a 24-hour WhatsApp number, 94979 80900, for complaints about illegal loan apps. Complaints can be sent as text, photos, videos or voice messages; calls are not accepted on that number. Check Kerala Police's official channels for the latest details before using it.
National Cybercrime Helpline 1930
For threats, blackmail, morphed photos or messages to your contacts, call 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. This works from anywhere in India.
Your local police station
You can also give a written complaint at your local police station, which can direct it to the right cyber unit. Take printed screenshots and keep a stamped copy of your complaint.
RBI's Sachet portal
Unregulated lending apps can also be reported on RBI's Sachet portal (sachet.rbi.org.in).

Step 3: Complain to regulated lenders and escalate
If the app is linked to a regulated bank or NBFC, write to the lender's grievance officer about any harassment or wrong charges, attaching your evidence. If the lender rejects your complaint or does not reply within 30 days, you can file a complaint under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme at cms.rbi.org.in, or call the RBI contact centre on 14448.
Step 4: Build a repayment or settlement plan
Reporting harassment protects you, but the money owed to regulated lenders still needs a plan. Here is a practical approach:
List all your loans. App name, lender, amount received, amount repaid, balance and due date.
Make a family budget. Include rent, food, travel, school fees and any remittances you rely on or send.
Stop new app loans. Uninstall apps you are not using.
Ask for time or a plan. If you can repay with more time, ask the lender in writing for an extension or instalment plan.
Consider settlement where repayment is not possible. A negotiated settlement may help when the total debt is far beyond your means. It is reported to credit bureaus as "settled" and affects your CIBIL score for a period.
Put everything in writing. Use our loan settlement request letter format as a starting point, and only pay through official channels.
Special situations for Kochi borrowers
Planning to work abroad
Many people in Kerala plan jobs in the Gulf, Europe or elsewhere. Unresolved loans do not disappear when you move, and a poor credit history can complicate future borrowing in India. It is usually better to settle or set up a clear repayment arrangement before you leave, and to keep your Indian contact details and bank account active so lenders can reach you through official channels.
Families with remittance income
If your household depends on money sent from abroad, delays in remittances can cause missed EMIs. Tell your lender early, explain the timing, and ask for a due date that matches when money usually arrives.
Small traders and self-employed borrowers
Income for small businesses can be seasonal. If your income dips during certain months, ask lenders for a plan that reflects that, and keep records of your earnings to support your request.
Watch out for fake settlement offers
When borrowers are under pressure, they become targets for a second kind of scam: fake "settlement" offers. Someone calls or messages claiming they can close all your loan apps for a small one-time payment, or that the lender has approved a huge discount if you pay today into a personal account. Before you pay anyone:
Confirm the offer directly with the lender using the contact details in your loan agreement or the official app, not the number that called you.
Never pay into a personal UPI ID or an individual's bank account. Settlement payments should go to the lender's official account or payment link.
Insist on a written settlement letter on the lender's letterhead or official email, showing the agreed amount, the payment date and confirmation that the account will be closed.
Be wary of urgency. "Offer valid only for the next two hours" is a classic pressure tactic.
Our guide on how to verify a loan app settlement offer covers the warning signs in more detail.
Keep your records in one place
A simple folder, on paper or on your phone, makes every step easier. Keep your loan agreements or KFS screenshots, bank statements showing credits and repayments, screenshots of any threats, complaint acknowledgement numbers, and every letter or email from lenders. When the loan is closed, add the no dues certificate or closure letter and keep it safely for future reference, especially if you plan to apply for a loan or move abroad later.
An illustrative example
Imagine Anju, a staff nurse in Ernakulam who took three app loans to cover a family wedding and visa paperwork. One app starts messaging her colleagues when she is two days late. She saves the messages, sends them to the Kerala Police WhatsApp number and 1930, checks which apps are linked to regulated NBFCs, and writes to those lenders asking for an instalment plan she can manage before her move abroad. (This is an illustrative example, not a real client story. Outcomes depend on each lender.)

Frequently asked questions
Can I complain about a loan app in Malayalam?
Many police and cyber crime channels accept complaints in regional languages. If you are unsure, write your complaint in the language you are most comfortable with and attach clear screenshots as evidence.
Can a loan app stop me from travelling abroad?
A simple unpaid app loan does not by itself stop you from travelling, but threats to that effect are a common pressure tactic. Real legal action goes through proper courts and notices. If you receive any genuine legal document, get advice before you travel.
Do I have to visit Bengaluru to work with Payday Rescue?
No. We support borrowers across India remotely through phone, WhatsApp and email.
Will settling my loan apps affect my CIBIL score?
Yes. Settled accounts are usually reported as "settled", which affects your CIBIL score for a period. Paying in full is better for your score where it is affordable, but settlement can be a realistic option when it is not.
