From office workers in Salt Lake Sector V and New Town to shopkeepers in Gariahat, students in College Street and families in Howrah and Behala, many people in and around Kolkata have used instant loan apps to get through a tight month. For some, it was one small loan repaid on time. For others, it turned into five or six apps, rising charges and calls to relatives. If you are looking for payday loan and loan app debt help in Kolkata, this guide explains your rights, where to report harassment in Kolkata and West Bengal, how to check whether your lender is genuine, and how to move towards a repayment or settlement plan you can actually manage.

Debt can feel isolating, especially when the messages start reaching people you know. You have not done anything shameful by borrowing. What matters now is taking the next step calmly and in the right order.

How loan app debt grows for Kolkata borrowers

The story is often similar:

  • A small, quick loan. Taken for rent, a hospital visit, a festival expense around Durga Puja, school fees or a gap between salaries.

  • A very short tenure. Many app loans must be repaid within weeks, with processing fees deducted upfront, so you receive less than the loan amount.

  • The second and third app. To repay the first loan on time, borrowers take another, and the total cost multiplies.

  • Pressure after the due date. Some apps, particularly unregulated ones, start calling and messaging contacts within a day or two of a missed payment.

If this sounds familiar, our guide to the real cost of a payday loan shows how quickly fees and rollovers add up.

Your rights with loan apps in West Bengal

RBI's rules apply in Kolkata in the same way as anywhere else in India. If your loan is from a bank or an RBI-regulated NBFC, or an app working on behalf of one:

  • No harassment. Threats, abusive language, intimidation and public humiliation are not permitted in recovery.

  • Calling hours. Recovery calls are limited to between 8 am and 7 pm.

  • Your phone data. Regulated digital lending apps should not access your contact list, call logs or media files.

  • Clear costs. You should have received a Key Fact Statement (KFS) showing the total cost and APR, and late-payment penalties must be disclosed penal charges, not penal interest.

  • Direct repayment. Under RBI's digital lending rules, repayments must go directly to the regulated lender's bank account, not to an agent's personal account or UPI ID.

  • A complaint route. Every regulated lender must have a grievance officer, and you can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman.

You can read more about agents' limits in our guide to RBI guidelines for recovery agents.

Step 1: Find out who your real lender is

Open the loan agreement or KFS inside the app and note the name of the actual lender, which should be a bank or NBFC. Then check whether the app appears in RBI's directory of digital lending apps, which RBI has published on its website since 1 July 2025. If no regulated lender is named, or the app does not appear, treat it as unregulated and be extra careful about sharing more data or making payments to unknown accounts. Our checklist to check if a loan app is RBI approved takes you through it.

Step 2: Protect yourself and preserve evidence

Before you report anything, take a few minutes to secure your phone and your proof:

  1. Screenshot every threat, message and call log, including messages sent to friends, relatives or colleagues. Note dates and times.

  2. Save payment proof such as bank statements and receipts showing what you received and what you have repaid.

  3. Revoke app permissions for contacts, photos, storage, camera and location in your phone settings.

  4. Tell close contacts that they may receive messages, and ask them not to engage or pay anyone.

  5. Do not pay in panic to a new UPI ID or personal account because someone threatens to share your photos. That rarely ends the threats.

Step 3: Report harassment in Kolkata

National Cybercrime Helpline 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in

For threats, blackmail, morphed photos, extortion or messages to your contacts, call 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. The West Bengal Police Cyber Crime Wing also refers citizens to the 1930 and 112 helplines. If you are in immediate danger, call 112.

Your local police station or cyber police station

You can give a written complaint at your local police station, which can forward it to the right cyber unit. Greater Kolkata is policed by different authorities depending on where you live: Kolkata Police covers the city, while areas such as Salt Lake and New Town, Howrah and Barrackpore fall under separate police commissionerates, each with their own cyber crime units. Check the official website of the police force for your area for current cyber helpline details. Take printed screenshots with you and ask for an acknowledgement of your complaint.

RBI Sachet portal

Unregulated lending apps can be reported on RBI's Sachet portal at sachet.rbi.org.in.

Regulated lenders and the RBI Ombudsman

If the app is linked to a bank or NBFC, write to the lender's grievance officer with your evidence. If the lender rejects your complaint or does not reply within 30 days, you can complain under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme at cms.rbi.org.in, or call the RBI contact centre on 14448. Our step-by-step guide on how to complain against a loan app in India covers each route in detail.

Step 4: Build a plan for the money you owe

Reporting harassment protects you, but loans from regulated lenders still need a plan. A simple approach:

  1. List every loan. App name, lender, amount actually received, amount repaid so far, current demand and due date.

  2. Make a household budget. Rent, food, electricity, travel, school fees, medicines and any support you give to family. Know what you can truly afford each month.

  3. Stop new app loans. Uninstall apps you no longer use so you are not tempted at a stressful moment.

  4. Prioritise. Put essentials first, then regulated loans with the highest penalties or the most serious notices.

  5. Ask for time where it will help. If a short delay will let you repay in full, ask the lender in writing for an extension or instalment plan. See how to ask a loan app for more time.

  6. Consider settlement where repayment is not realistic. A negotiated settlement may help when total dues are far beyond your means. Settled accounts are reported to credit bureaus as "settled", which affects your CIBIL score for a period.

  7. Get every agreement in writing. Use our loan settlement request letter format and pay only through the lender's official channel.

Situations common in Kolkata

Salaried employees with delayed or irregular pay

Whether you work in IT in Sector V, retail, hospitality or a private office, a delayed salary can make several auto-debits bounce at once. Tell lenders early, in writing, and ask for a due date that matches when your salary actually arrives.

Small traders and self-employed borrowers

Many shopkeepers and small business owners see income rise around festivals and fall in quieter months. If your earnings are seasonal, keep a record of them and ask lenders for a plan that reflects that pattern rather than a fixed amount you cannot meet.

Students and young job seekers

Students and freshers are often targeted by apps offering tiny loans with very short tenures. If you are in this situation, our guide on loan app debt for students and freshers explains how to stop the cycle.

Families supporting relatives

If you are supporting parents or siblings, debt pressure can feel heavier. Include that support in your budget honestly. Lenders and advisers can only help you plan realistically if the numbers are real.

Watch out for fake "settlement" offers

When you are under pressure, you may receive calls offering to "close all your loan apps" for a small one-time payment, or claiming the lender has approved a huge discount if you pay within the hour. Before paying anyone:

  • Confirm directly with the lender using contact details from the official app or agreement, not the number that called you.

  • Never pay into a personal UPI ID or bank account.

  • Insist on a written settlement letter from the lender showing the agreed amount, payment date and confirmation that the account will be closed.

  • Be wary of extreme urgency. "Offer valid for two hours" is a classic pressure tactic.

Our guide on how to verify a loan app settlement offer explains the warning signs in more detail.

An illustrative example

Imagine Sourav, a 31-year-old retail supervisor in Behala, who took loans from four apps after his mother's hospital stay. One app begins messaging his cousins on day two after a missed payment. He saves the screenshots, files a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in, revokes the app's permissions, and checks which apps are linked to regulated NBFCs. He then writes to those lenders with a realistic monthly amount and asks for a settlement discussion on the largest loan. (This is an illustrative example, not a real client story. Outcomes depend on each lender and each borrower's situation.)

Frequently asked questions

Can I file a loan app complaint in Bengali?

Many police and cyber crime channels accept complaints in regional languages. Write your complaint in the language you are most comfortable with and attach clear screenshots as evidence. If you are unsure, ask at your local police station.

Do I have to visit Bengaluru to work with Payday Rescue?

No. We support borrowers across India remotely through phone, WhatsApp and email.

Will a loan app send police to my home in Kolkata for non-payment?

Not repaying a loan is generally a civil matter, and genuine legal action involves proper written notices and courts. Threats of immediate arrest are a common pressure tactic. If you receive a real legal notice, do not ignore it and get advice from a qualified lawyer.

Will settling my loan apps affect my CIBIL score?

Yes. Settled accounts are usually reported as "settled", which affects your CIBIL score for a period. Paying in full is better for your score where it is affordable, but settlement can be a realistic option when it is not.
