Written Off Loan in CIBIL: What It Means and How to Fix It

If your CIBIL report shows a loan as "written off", you have probably noticed that new loan and credit card applications get rejected. Many borrowers assume a written-off loan has been forgiven. It has not. This guide explains what the status means, how it compares with "settled" and "closed", and the honest steps you can take to change it.
What "written off" means
When a borrower stops paying for a long time, the lender may write the loan off in its own books. This is an accounting step: the lender records the unpaid amount as a loss. It does not cancel your debt. The lender, or a collection agency acting for it, can still try to recover the money, and the loan is reported to credit bureaus such as CIBIL with a written-off status.
Written off vs settled vs closed
Written off: the lender has recorded the loan as a loss. The dues are still outstanding. This is one of the most damaging entries on a credit report.
Settled: you and the lender agreed that you would pay less than the full amount, and you paid it. The account is finished, but the report shows you did not repay in full. Read more about settled status and your CIBIL score.
Closed: the loan was repaid in full. This is the status lenders want to see.
How to change a written-off status
No one can legally delete accurate information from your credit report. Be wary of anyone who promises to "remove" a written-off entry for a fee. The genuine routes are:
Pay the outstanding dues in full. The lender then updates the account to "closed". This is the best outcome for your score, but often the hardest financially.
Negotiate a settlement. If you cannot pay in full, settling resolves the debt, and the status moves from written off to settled. Settled is still negative, but it shows the matter is resolved and stops further recovery.
Convert settled to closed later. If you settle first, you can usually pay the waived amount later and ask the lender to report the account as closed.
In every case, ask for a written settlement or closure letter and a no-dues certificate. Our guide to getting a loan NOC and no-dues certificate explains what to ask for.
If CIBIL still shows the old status
Lenders report updates to credit bureaus regularly, but corrections are sometimes missed. If your report has not been updated after you paid or settled, raise a dispute with the credit bureau and attach your closure letter. Our step-by-step guide on raising a CIBIL dispute covers the process and the timelines the RBI expects.
Rebuilding your score afterwards
Once the account is resolved, your score recovers gradually through good behaviour:
Pay every remaining EMI and card bill on time.
Keep credit card usage low compared with your limit.
Consider a secured credit card against a fixed deposit to rebuild a positive record.
Avoid applying for several loans in a short time.
Check your credit report at least once a year.
Key takeaways
Written off means the lender recorded a loss, not that your debt was forgiven.
Paying in full leads to "closed"; settling leads to "settled".
Accurate negative entries cannot be removed for a fee; only resolving the debt changes them.
If the bureau is not updated after you resolve the loan, raise a dispute with proof.
If a written-off loan is still unresolved, our payday and loan app settlement service can help you negotiate a settlement you can afford.
