You have finally paid off a loan app, or agreed a settlement and made the last payment. It is a huge relief. But a few weeks later, a recovery call comes in, or your credit report still shows the loan as overdue. This is where a loan app NOC (No Objection Certificate) or no dues certificate becomes your most important document. It is written proof from the lender that the account is closed and nothing more is owed.

This guide explains what a NOC is, why you must get one after every closure or settlement, how to request it, what it should say, and how to fix your credit report if the loan still shows as active.

What is a NOC or no dues certificate?

A NOC or no dues certificate (sometimes called a closure letter or account closure statement) is a letter issued by the lender confirming that your loan account has been closed. For a loan taken through an app, the NOC should come from the regulated lender behind the app, usually an NBFC or bank, not just from the app's chat support.

A proper NOC typically includes:

  • Your name and loan account number.

  • The name of the lender (bank or NBFC) and, ideally, the app or platform name.

  • The date the account was closed.

  • A clear statement that no dues are outstanding, or, for a settlement, that the account is closed on the agreed settlement amount and no further amount is payable.

  • The signature or digital authentication of an authorised official, or an official email from the lender's domain.

Why the NOC matters so much for loan app borrowers

Many people skip this step because the app shows "paid" or the balance has gone to zero. That is risky, for several reasons:

  • Proof against fresh recovery calls. Loan app accounts are sometimes handed to agencies, and records do not always update quickly. A NOC lets you shut down a wrongful call in one message.

  • Proof for your credit report. If a bureau still shows the loan as open or overdue, the NOC is your main evidence in a dispute.

  • Apps can shut down or change. Some apps disappear, change names or stop supporting old loans. If you have not saved your NOC and payment proof, it becomes much harder to prove you paid.

  • Settlements need clear wording. If you settled for less than the full amount, the letter must make clear that the lender accepts the settlement as full and final for that account.

Before you pay a settlement at all, make sure you have the offer in writing. Our guide on how to verify a loan app settlement offer before you pay explains what to check.

Step-by-step: how to get a NOC from a loan app

  1. Save your payment proof first. Download bank statements, UPI receipts and the app's payment confirmation for every payment, especially the last one.

  2. Check the lender's name. Look in your Key Fact Statement or loan agreement for the bank or NBFC that actually lent the money.

  3. Request the NOC in writing. Use the app's support section and also email the lender's customer care or grievance officer. Include your name, registered mobile number, loan account number, the closure or settlement date, and a copy of the final payment proof.

  4. Ask for specific wording. For a full repayment, ask for confirmation that there are no outstanding dues. For a settlement, ask for confirmation that the account is closed as settled and no further amount is payable.

  5. Follow up. If you do not receive it within a reasonable time, send a reminder that refers to your first email. Keep every reply.

  6. Store it safely. Save the NOC as a PDF in at least two places, such as your email and cloud storage, alongside your payment proofs.

There is no single RBI-prescribed format or timeline for NOCs on unsecured app loans, so a clear written request and polite follow-up are your best tools. If the lender ignores you, you can raise a formal complaint, as explained below.

Settled vs closed: what your credit report will show

It is important to understand the difference between these two outcomes:

  • Closed (paid in full). You repaid everything owed. This is the best outcome for your credit history.

  • Settled. The lender accepted less than the full amount. The account is closed, but it is usually reported to credit bureaus as "settled", which lenders read as a negative sign. A settlement affects your CIBIL score and may make new credit harder to get for some time.

Some borrowers later choose to pay the remaining waived amount to have the status updated to closed. Whether that is possible depends on the lender. Our guide on loan app CIBIL score after default and settlement explains the impact and how people rebuild over time.

How to check and correct your credit report after closure

Since 1 January 2025, RBI has required lenders to report credit information to credit bureaus at least every fortnight, so changes should appear sooner than before. Still, errors happen. Here is what to do:

  1. Get your credit report. You are entitled to a free full credit report once a year from each credit bureau, and many platforms offer free score checks.

  2. Find the loan. Check the status (closed, settled, overdue or written off), the reported balance and the date of last update.

  3. Raise a dispute if it is wrong. Use the credit bureau's online dispute form and attach your NOC and payment proof. You can also write to the lender asking them to correct the data they report.

  4. Know the timeline. Under RBI's framework, credit institutions and credit bureaus must resolve such complaints within 30 calendar days, failing which you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 per day of delay.

  5. Escalate if needed. If the lender or bureau does not resolve your complaint, you may approach the RBI Ombudsman through cms.rbi.org.in, provided the entity is covered by the scheme.

Common problems, and what to do about them

"The app says paid, but recovery calls continue"

Send the caller's number, date and time, along with your NOC and payment proof, to the lender's grievance officer and ask them to recall the account from the agency. Keep it in writing. If the harassment continues, our guide on how to complain against a loan app covers the escalation routes.

"The lender refuses to give a NOC"

Ask the lender to explain in writing why it cannot issue one. If the reason is a small leftover balance, such as a late charge, ask for a detailed statement. If you disagree, raise a formal complaint and keep paying attention to the 30-day escalation window.

"The app has shut down"

Contact the lender (NBFC or bank) named in your loan documents directly. Regulated lenders remain responsible for loans given through apps they work with.

"I paid an agent directly and have no receipt"

This is a difficult position. Gather whatever proof you have, such as UPI transaction IDs and chats, and ask the lender to confirm whether the payment was received. In future, pay only to the lender's official account or through the app.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get a NOC from a loan app?

There is no single RBI-prescribed timeline for NOCs on unsecured app loans, and practice varies between lenders. Request it in writing right after your final payment, follow up politely, and escalate through the grievance officer if it does not arrive.

Is a screenshot of the app showing zero balance enough?

Keep it, but do not rely on it alone. A formal NOC or closure letter from the lender carries far more weight in a credit bureau dispute or if recovery calls restart.

Will my CIBIL score improve after I get a NOC?

The NOC itself does not change your score, but it helps make sure the account is reported correctly. A loan closed in full is better for your history than one marked settled. Rebuilding usually takes time and consistent repayments on any other credit.

Can I get a NOC after a settlement?

Yes. Ask for a letter confirming the account is closed on the agreed settlement amount and that no further dues are payable. Make sure the wording matches the settlement offer you accepted.
