Wrong Loan App Entry on Your CIBIL Report? How to Raise a CIBIL Dispute and Get It Corrected

You check your credit report after months of stress and find something that makes your heart sink: a loan app you never used, an "overdue" tag on a loan you closed long ago, or a settled loan still showing as unpaid. A wrong entry like this can block a new loan, a credit card or even a rental agreement. The good news is that you can raise a CIBIL dispute and, in most cases, get a genuine error corrected without paying anyone. This guide explains how the dispute process works, the time limits lenders and credit bureaus must follow under RBI rules, what to do if your dispute is rejected, and how to protect yourself while it is being fixed.
Why loan app entries go wrong on credit reports
Loan apps that work with RBI-regulated lenders report your loans to credit bureaus through that lender, a bank or NBFC. Because so many small, short-tenure loans are reported every month, mistakes do happen. The most common problems borrowers see are:
A loan you never took. Your PAN or KYC documents may have been misused to open a loan in your name, sometimes after you shared documents with a fake app or agent.
An unsolicited loan you did not accept. Some borrowers find money credited by an app they only installed. If this happened to you, read our guide on what to do when a loan app credits money without applying.
A repaid loan still showing as overdue. The lender may not have reported the final payment, or reported it late.
A settled loan showing the wrong amount or wrong status. For example, the report may still show the full outstanding instead of "settled", or the settlement date may be missing.
Duplicate accounts. The same loan appears twice, which makes your debt look larger.
Wrong personal details. Mismatched names, addresses or dates of birth can mix your report with someone else's.
Not every negative entry is an error. If you genuinely missed EMIs or settled a loan for less than the full amount, the report is allowed to show that. A dispute is meant to correct information that is factually wrong, not to remove accurate history. If you want to understand how genuine defaults and settlements are shown, see our explainer on loan app CIBIL score after default and settlement.
Step 1: Get your full credit report first
Before you dispute anything, you need the full report with account numbers and lender names. RBI requires every credit information company to give individuals one free full credit report, including the credit score, once every calendar year, in electronic form after verifying your identity. India has four credit information companies: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. A loan may be reported to one bureau and not another, so it is worth checking more than one.
When you read the report, note down for each wrong entry:
The lender's name (the bank or NBFC, not just the app name).
The account or loan number shown.
The date opened, the amount and the status shown.
Exactly what is wrong and what it should say.
Step 2: Gather your proof
A dispute moves faster when you can show evidence. Collect whatever applies to you:
UPI or bank transaction references for every repayment.
The closure email, no-dues certificate or NOC from the lender. Our guide on loan app NOC and no dues certificates explains how to ask for one.
The written settlement letter showing the agreed amount and that it was paid.
Screenshots of the app showing "loan closed" or "no outstanding".
For a loan you never took, a copy of your cyber crime complaint (from cybercrime.gov.in or the 1930 helpline) and a police complaint if you have filed one.
Keep everything in one folder with dates. Never send original documents; copies are enough.
Step 3: Raise the dispute with the credit bureau and the lender
You can raise a dispute online on the credit bureau's website using your report details. Select the specific account, choose what is wrong (ownership, status, amount, dates or duplicate) and upload or describe your proof. The bureau sends the dispute to the lender for verification, because only the lender can confirm or change the data it reported.
At the same time, write directly to the lender's grievance redressal officer. Regulated lenders and their apps must display customer care and grievance details. A short email works well: state your name, loan number, the error, what the correct position is, and attach your proof. Ask them to correct the data with all credit bureaus, not just one.
The RBI time limits and ₹100-a-day compensation
In October 2023, RBI issued a compensation framework for delays in correcting credit information. Under it:
A credit report complaint should be resolved within 30 calendar days of the date you first filed it.
The lender (credit institution) has 21 calendar days to send corrected information to the credit bureau after being told about the error, and the bureau then has 9 calendar days to resolve the dispute, as TransUnion CIBIL explains on its compensation page.
If the complaint is not resolved within 30 days, you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 for every calendar day of delay, paid by the lender and/or bureau in proportion to the delay each caused.
According to TransUnion CIBIL, compensation applies to disputes filed on or after 26 April 2024, it is credited to the bank account you give when you file, and it applies even if the final result is that no change was needed, as long as the 30-day limit was crossed. It does not apply simply because you are unhappy with the outcome. So when you raise a dispute online, enter your bank account details carefully.
RBI also requires lenders to send you an SMS or email alert when they report a default or days-past-due information about you to a credit bureau, and to tell you the reasons if they reject your request to correct data. If you never received such an alert for a loan you do not recognise, mention that in your complaint.
Step 4: If the dispute is rejected or ignored
Sometimes the lender simply "confirms" its data and the dispute is closed. Do not give up if you have proof.
Write to the lender again, escalating to its principal nodal officer, and ask for the specific reason for rejection in writing.
Approach the RBI Ombudsman. Credit information companies were brought under the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme from 1 September 2022, and banks and most NBFCs are covered too. You can file a free complaint at cms.rbi.org.in if the lender or bureau does not reply within 30 days, or if you are unhappy with its reply. The RBI contact centre number is 14448. Generally, you must first complain to the entity and file with the Ombudsman within one year of its reply.
For fraud loans in your name, keep your cyber crime complaint number handy and share it with both the lender and the bureau. A loan opened through identity theft should not be your liability once the lender verifies the fraud.

A special case: settled loans
Many of our readers have settled payday or loan app debt. A settlement is not an error, and you should expect it to show as "settled" rather than "closed". This affects your CIBIL score, and lenders will see it for years. However, these are genuine errors you can dispute after a settlement:
The loan still shows as "overdue" or "written off" with the full outstanding after you paid the agreed amount.
The settled amount or date is wrong.
The loan has not been updated at all months after payment.
Some borrowers later choose to pay the remaining difference so the status can be changed from "settled" to "closed". Whether this is worth it depends on your plans and budget; ask the lender in writing what exactly would change before paying anything more. To understand how settlement fits into the full debt resolution process, read our pillar guide on how payday loan settlement services work.
An illustrative example
This is an illustrative example, not a real client story. Arjun, a 29-year-old sales executive, settled two loan app debts last year and kept both settlement letters and UPI receipts. When he applied for a credit card, he found one loan still showing as overdue with the full amount. He downloaded his free report, raised a dispute online with the lender's name and loan number, uploaded the settlement letter and payment proof, and emailed the lender's grievance officer the same day. He noted the dispute date in his calendar so he would know when 30 days had passed, and he kept copies of every email in case he needed to approach the RBI Ombudsman later.
Mistakes that slow down a CIBIL dispute
Paying a "credit repair" agent to delete accurate data. No one can legally remove correct information from your report. Be wary of anyone who promises a guaranteed score increase.
Disputing everything at once without proof. Focus on entries that are actually wrong and back each one with documents.
Using only the app name. The report lists the bank or NBFC behind the app. Use that name.
Not following up. Track your dispute ID and the date filed, so you know when the 30-day limit has passed.
Taking a new loan app loan to "build credit" quickly. This usually adds cost and risk rather than fixing your report.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a CIBIL dispute take to resolve?
Under RBI's framework, a credit report complaint should be resolved within 30 calendar days of filing. If it takes longer, you are entitled to ₹100 for each day of delay, paid by the lender and/or credit bureau responsible.
Can I remove a settled loan from my CIBIL report?
Not if the information is accurate. A genuine settlement can stay on your report. You can dispute it only if the status, amount or date is wrong. Some lenders may update the status to "closed" if you pay the remaining dues, but confirm this in writing first.
A loan app loan I never took is on my CIBIL report. What should I do?
Report the identity misuse on cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930, raise a dispute with the credit bureau marking the account as "not mine", and write to the lender's grievance officer with your complaint number. If they do not resolve it in 30 days, you can complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
Do I need to pay anyone to correct my credit report?
No. Getting your free annual report and raising a dispute with a credit bureau, the lender or the RBI Ombudsman costs nothing. Be cautious of anyone who charges to "delete" accurate negative entries.
