How to Ask a Loan App for More Time: Repayment Extension, Restructuring and What to Say

Updated: 4 days ago
If you can see that you will not be able to repay your loan on time, asking for a loan app repayment extension is often the smartest first move. Many borrowers wait until the due date has passed, the penalties have started and the recovery calls have begun. By then, the conversation with the lender is much harder. This guide explains how to ask a loan app, NBFC or bank for more time, what kinds of relief you can request, the exact words you can use, and what to do if the lender says no. It is written for ordinary salaried and self-employed borrowers in India who want to stay honest with their lender without falling deeper into debt.

Extension, restructuring or settlement: know what you are asking for
Lenders use different words for different kinds of relief. Knowing the difference helps you ask for the right thing.
Short extension or due-date change. You ask to pay the same EMI a few days or weeks later, for example because your salary date moved. This is the lightest request.
Partial payment arrangement. You pay part of the EMI now and the rest on an agreed date.
Restructuring or rescheduling. The loan terms are changed, for example a longer tenure so the EMI becomes smaller. The total interest you pay may go up.
Settlement. The lender agrees to accept less than the full outstanding amount to close the account. This is usually a last resort, and it is reported to credit bureaus as "settled", which affects your CIBIL score.
An important point: in India, there is no automatic legal right to an extension or restructuring on a personal loan or loan app loan. Whether to offer relief is the lender's decision, based on its own policy. That is why how and when you ask matters so much.
When should you ask for a loan app repayment extension?
The best time is before your due date, ideally as soon as you know there will be a problem. Asking early shows good faith, and many lenders have more flexibility before an account becomes overdue.
Good reasons to ask early include:
Your salary is delayed or your pay date has changed.
You have had a temporary drop in income, for example reduced shifts or a gap between jobs.
You face an unexpected expense such as a family medical emergency.
You have a confirmed future inflow, such as a pending bonus, final settlement or refund, but not yet in hand.
If your salary has been delayed, our guide on what to do when your salary is delayed and a loan app EMI is due walks through the first 48 hours.
Step-by-step: how to ask the lender for more time
Step 1: Find out who your lender really is
Many loan apps are only a platform. The actual lender is a bank or NBFC named in your loan agreement or Key Fact Statement (KFS). Your request should go to the lender's official customer care or grievance channel, not to a recovery agent's personal number.
Step 2: Know your numbers
Before you call or write, list:
The outstanding amount and due date.
How much you can realistically pay now, and when you can pay the rest.
Your other loans and essential monthly expenses, so you do not promise something you cannot keep.
Step 3: Put your request in writing
Use the app's support chat, the official email or the grievance form. Writing creates a record. A simple message could read:
"Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing about loan account [number]. My EMI of ₹[amount] is due on [date]. Due to [short reason, such as salary delay], I will not be able to pay the full amount on time. I request an extension until [date] / to pay ₹[amount] now and the balance on [date]. I intend to repay and would appreciate your support. Please confirm in writing any charges that will apply."
Step 4: Ask about charges clearly
Under RBI's instructions on penal charges, which came into effect from 1 January 2024, regulated lenders can levy penalties for late payment only as "penal charges" rather than as extra "penal interest", and must not charge further interest on those penal charges. The amount and reason must be disclosed in your loan agreement and KFS. Ask the lender to confirm in writing what will apply if your request is accepted.
Step 5: Get the agreement confirmed
If the lender agrees, ask for an email, SMS or in-app confirmation with the new date or plan. Keep this safe. A phone promise from an agent is not enough.
Step 6: Keep the promise you make
This is the most important step. A borrower who agrees to a plan and keeps it is in a much stronger position if they need help again later.

What if the loan app refuses your request?
Sometimes lenders simply refuse, or the app's chat keeps giving automatic replies. Here is what you can do:
Escalate within the lender. Use the grievance redressal officer details shown in the app, website or loan documents. Regulated lenders must have a grievance mechanism.
Pay what you can, with a record. Paying a part through the official app or bank account can show good faith, but only pay through official channels and keep receipts.
Approach the RBI Ombudsman for service failures. If your complaint to a regulated lender is rejected or not answered within 30 days, you can file a complaint under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme at cms.rbi.org.in. Note that the Ombudsman handles complaints about deficiency in service, such as wrong charges or harassment. It does not force a lender to give you an extension.
Avoid new borrowing to cover the gap. Taking another app loan to pay this one usually makes the problem bigger.
How an extension or restructuring affects your CIBIL score
If an extension is agreed before your due date and recorded properly, the impact may be limited. Once a payment is overdue, the lender will generally report the delay to credit bureaus, and your score can drop. A restructured loan may be flagged as restructured in your credit report. A settled loan is shown as "settled", which future lenders treat as a negative mark for a period.
To understand how delays build up over time, read what happens after you miss a loan EMI for 30, 60, 90 days and more.
An illustrative example
Imagine Priya, an accounts assistant in Bengaluru, who has a ₹25,000 loan through an app linked to an NBFC. Her company tells her salary will be delayed by ten days. Three days before her EMI date, she emails the NBFC's support address, explains the delay, offers to pay ₹2,000 now and the rest on the 15th, and asks for written confirmation of any charges. The NBFC agrees and confirms by email. Priya pays as promised. (This is an illustrative example, not a real client story. Every lender decides requests on its own policy.)
Common mistakes to avoid
Going silent. Ignoring calls and messages usually leads to more pressure, not less.
Making promises you cannot keep. Each broken promise reduces your credibility with the lender.
Paying agents personally. Only pay through the official app, bank account or payment link the lender has confirmed in writing.
Accepting unclear terms. If you do not understand the new charges, ask again before agreeing.
Hiding the problem from family. A trusted person can help you think clearly and plan.
When it is time to consider settlement
If you have several loan apps, your income has fallen for months, or the total due is far beyond what you can pay even with extensions, a simple extension may only delay the problem. That is when a structured plan, and in some cases a negotiated settlement, may make more sense. Our guide on how to settle multiple loan apps with a practical plan explains how to prioritise.

Frequently asked questions
Can a loan app legally refuse to give me an extension?
Yes. An extension or restructuring is at the lender's discretion under its own policy. However, a regulated lender must still treat you fairly, disclose charges clearly and follow RBI rules on recovery conduct.
Will asking for an extension reduce my CIBIL score?
Asking itself does not affect your score. What matters is whether payments become overdue and how the lender reports any changed arrangement. Paying on the new agreed date and getting it confirmed in writing helps.
How much late fee can a loan app charge?
There is no single fixed amount. For regulated lenders, late-payment penalties must be charged as penal charges, be reasonable, and be disclosed in your loan agreement and Key Fact Statement. Check your KFS and ask the lender to confirm the amount in writing.
Should I pay a part of the EMI if I cannot pay all of it?
A partial payment through official channels can show good faith, but confirm with the lender how it will be applied and whether the account will still be marked overdue. Keep every receipt.
