Recovery Agent Home Visit: What Is Legal and What You Can Do

A recovery agent turning up at your home is one of the most stressful parts of falling behind on a loan, especially when family members or neighbours are watching. Agents working for RBI-regulated lenders are allowed to visit, but only within clear limits. Knowing those limits helps you stay calm and protect yourself.

Can a recovery agent come to your home?

Yes. Banks and NBFCs can send recovery agents to contact borrowers in person. However, the RBI requires lenders to make sure their agents behave lawfully and respectfully, and the lender is responsible for what its agents do.

What the rules require

Under the RBI's guidelines for lenders and their recovery agents:

  • Timing: agents should contact you only between 8 am and 7 pm, unless you have asked for a different time.

  • Identification: agents must carry an identity card and an authorisation letter from the lender, and show them when asked.

  • Conduct: no threats, intimidation, abusive language or physical force.

  • Privacy: agents must not humiliate you in public or pressure your family, neighbours or colleagues.

  • Sensitive occasions: agents should avoid visits during events such as a bereavement or a family emergency.

New rules for banks from January 2027

The RBI has issued updated directions for commercial banks that take effect on 1 January 2027. Among other changes, banks will have to inform you at least one day before an agent's first in-person visit, use only recovery agents certified by an approved institute such as the IIBF, and publish the list of recovery agencies they use on their websites. These directions apply to commercial banks; check your lender's own policy if your loan is from an NBFC or a loan app.

What to do when an agent visits

  1. Stay calm and speak politely. You do not have to let anyone into your home.

  2. Ask for the agent's identity card and the lender's authorisation letter. Note the name, agency and lender.

  3. Ask which loan account the visit is about and the exact amount claimed.

  4. Do not hand over cash. Pay only through the lender's official channels and get a receipt.

  5. If you cannot pay now, say you will contact the lender in writing with a proposal, then do so.

  6. If the agent threatens or abuses you, note the time and details, and if possible record the interaction or ask a family member to witness it.

How to complain about an illegal visit

  • Complain in writing to the lender's grievance redressal officer, with the details you noted.

  • If the lender does not resolve it within 30 days, or you are unhappy with the reply, complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.

  • For threats, intimidation or physical force, go to the police. For online threats or misuse of your photos, use cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930.

The lasting fix

Knowing your rights protects you during a visit, but visits usually stop only when the debt itself is resolved. If your loans have become unmanageable, see how our payday and loan app settlement service can help you negotiate a way out.
