How Much Discount Can You Get in a Payday Loan Settlement?

"How much will I save if I settle?" is the first question almost every borrower asks. The honest answer is that it depends on your lender, how long the loan has been overdue, and what your outstanding amount is made of. Anyone who promises a fixed percentage before seeing your loans is guessing. This guide explains how settlement discounts actually work so you can set realistic expectations.
What your outstanding amount is made of
The amount a lender demands is usually a mix of:
Principal: the money you actually borrowed (for loan apps, often less than the sanctioned amount once processing fees are deducted).
Interest: the agreed interest for the loan period.
Overdue charges: penal charges, late fees and extension or rollover fees added after you missed payments.
Other fees: processing, platform or convenience fees.
On payday and instant loan apps, overdue charges and fees can grow quickly, so a large part of the amount demanded may not be original principal. Since 2024, RBI rules require regulated lenders to levy penalties for default as penal charges rather than penal interest added to the rate, and not to compound them, which also helps you check whether the amount claimed is reasonable.
What lenders usually waive first
In most negotiations, lenders are more willing to give up the parts of the debt that were added after default than the money they originally lent. In practice that usually means:
Late fees, penal charges and overdue charges.
Part or all of the overdue interest.
Occasionally part of the principal, usually only for long-overdue accounts where the lender expects to recover little otherwise.
What decides how big the discount is
How long the loan has been overdue: lenders tend to offer more once an account has been overdue for several months.
The lender's own policy: banks, NBFCs and loan apps each have their own settlement rules and approval limits.
Your documented hardship: job loss, medical emergencies or salary delays, backed by documents, strengthen your case.
How you pay: a single lump sum usually gets a better offer than a long instalment plan.
Whether the lender is regulated: for apps operating outside RBI-regulated lenders, the approach is different. See what to do if you borrowed from an illegal loan app.
A worked example (illustrative only)
Suppose a loan app sanctioned ₹10,000, deducted fees and credited ₹8,500, and after several months of default now demands ₹18,000. Of that, ₹8,000 might be overdue charges and fees. A negotiation would typically start by challenging and seeking a waiver of those charges, then discuss the overdue interest. Where the final figure lands depends on the factors above. How to negotiate realistically
Ask for a full statement of account showing principal, interest and each charge.
Work out what you can genuinely pay as a lump sum or short plan before you call.
Make your offer in writing, explain your hardship, and keep records.
Never pay a settlement amount until the lender confirms the agreed figure in writing.
Pay only through the lender's official channels, and collect a settlement letter and no-dues certificate.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a fixed settlement percentage for payday loans?
No. There is no fixed or guaranteed percentage. Each lender decides based on its own policy, how long the loan is overdue, your hardship and how you can pay.
Do lenders waive the principal in a settlement?
Lenders usually waive late fees, penal charges and overdue interest first. A principal reduction is less common and usually only offered on long-overdue accounts.
Is a lump sum better than an instalment settlement?
Usually yes. Lenders tend to accept a lower total when they receive it in one payment, but only agree to what you can genuinely afford.
How do I know a settlement offer is genuine?
Get the offer in writing from the lender's official email or letterhead, verify it with the lender's customer care, and pay only through its official channels. See our guide to verifying settlement offers.
