Surat runs on hard work. Whether you are in the diamond trade, the textile markets, a factory, a shop, an office or a delivery job, the city moves fast, and so does money. That is also why so many people turn to instant loan apps when a salary is late, a payment from a buyer is delayed or an emergency comes up. If you are now looking for payday loan and loan app debt help in Surat because the repayments have become too much, this guide is for you.

We will explain why loan app debt grows so quickly, what your rights are if recovery agents harass you, where to complain in Surat and nationally, and the realistic options for getting out of debt, including settlement, and what each option means for your CIBIL score.

Why loan app debt builds up so quickly

Payday loans and instant loan apps are designed for speed: a small amount, approved in minutes, to be repaid in a few days or weeks. The problem is the cost. Processing fees, interest calculated over a very short tenure, GST on fees and late charges can make the effective annual cost (the APR) of a small, short loan very high. For a worked example, see our breakdown of the real cost of a ₹10,000 payday loan.

Common patterns we see among borrowers:

  • Irregular income. Many people in Surat are paid by the piece, by the shift, on commission or when a buyer settles a bill. One delayed payment can mean one missed EMI.

  • Borrowing from one app to pay another. It feels like a solution for a week, but each new loan adds fresh fees, and the total keeps rising.

  • Small loans, many apps. Five or six loans of a few thousand rupees each can be harder to manage than one larger loan, because every app has its own due date and its own recovery team.

  • Shame and silence. Many borrowers hide the debt from family until the calls start, which leaves less time to plan.

None of this means you have done something wrong. It means the product is expensive and the situation needs a plan.

Know your rights: what recovery agents can and cannot do

You still owe a genuine loan taken from a regulated lender, but owing money does not take away your dignity or your rights. Under the RBI's directions on recovery and fair practices, lenders and their agents must not use abusive language, threats, intimidation or public humiliation, and must not make calls at odd hours. RBI has also issued amended directions on recovery of loan dues and recovery agents in August 2026, which come into effect from 1 January 2027 and set out a specific contact window of 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, along with stricter rules on conduct and agent certification.

In plain terms:

  • Agents should identify themselves and the lender they represent.

  • They must not threaten you, abuse you or contact your friends and family to shame you.

  • They must not post your details on social media or send messages to your contacts.

  • Lenders using digital lending apps should not access your contacts, photos or files to pressure you.

  • You have the right to complain to the lender's grievance officer, and to the RBI Ombudsman if that does not work.

Where to complain in Surat

If you are being harassed, or you think you borrowed from an illegal app, these are the places to go:

National Cyber Crime Helpline and portal

Call 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in if you face threats, morphed photos, messages to your contacts, or fraud. These are national channels and work for Surat residents.

Surat City Police

Surat City Police has a cyber crime unit and runs a WhatsApp chatbot called "Surat Cyber Mitra" that gives guidance on cyber fraud and helps citizens with complaints. Check the Surat City Police website or social media pages for the current contact details. For threats or extortion, you can also approach your local police station with your evidence.

The lender and the RBI

For a regulated lender, first complain in writing to the lender's grievance redressal officer. If you get no reply in 30 days, or you are unhappy with the response, you can file a complaint under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme at cms.rbi.org.in, or call the RBI contact centre on 14448. If the app is not linked to any RBI-regulated lender, you can also report it on the RBI's Sachet portal (sachet.rbi.org.in).

Keep a record of everything: screenshots, call logs, recordings where lawful, and your loan documents.

Step-by-step: how to take control of loan app debt

1. List every loan

Write down every app or lender, the amount borrowed, the amount the app now says you owe, the due date and whether it is overdue. Include personal loans and credit card dues too. Seeing the full picture is the first step out.

2. Check which apps are genuine

Check whether each app is linked to a bank or NBFC registered with the RBI. Since July 2025, the RBI has published a directory of digital lending apps operated by its regulated entities on its website. A genuine loan should be repaid or resolved properly; an illegal app should be reported. Our guide on what to do if you borrowed from an illegal loan app explains the difference.

3. Stop borrowing new money to repay old loans

This is the hardest step, but it is the one that stops the debt from growing. Each new loan adds fresh charges. Our guide to settling multiple loan apps with a practical plan shows how to prioritise.

4. Work out what you can realistically pay

Look at your monthly income and essential expenses (rent, food, school fees, travel, medicines). What is left is what you can put towards debt. Be honest with yourself. A plan built on wishful numbers usually fails within a month.

5. Talk to lenders in writing

Many regulated lenders will discuss a short extension, restructuring or a settlement if you explain your situation clearly. Always ask for any offer in writing, from an official email or on the lender's letterhead, before you pay. Never pay a "settlement amount" to a personal UPI ID.

6. Get written closure

Once a loan is repaid or settled, ask for a no dues certificate or settlement letter, and check your credit report a few weeks later to make sure the status has been updated.

Is loan settlement right for you?

A settlement means the lender agrees to accept less than the full amount owed, usually as a one-time payment or in a few instalments, to close the account. It can bring real relief when you genuinely cannot repay in full. But it is important to understand the trade-off:

  • It affects your CIBIL score. A settled loan is usually reported as "settled" rather than "closed". This can lower your score and make it harder to get credit for some time.

  • It is not guaranteed. The lender decides whether to accept a settlement and on what terms. No one can promise a fixed discount.

  • It works best with a plan. Settling one app while others keep growing does not solve the problem. A combined plan across all your loans usually works better.

If you can repay in full with some extra time, a repayment plan or extension may be better for your credit record than settlement. If your debts are far beyond what you can pay, settlement may be the more realistic path. Our pillar guide on how Payday Rescue's settlement services work explains the process step by step.

An illustrative example

Illustrative example, not a real client: Meena works in a textile showroom in Surat and earns a fixed salary, but her husband's income from embroidery work varies month to month. After a family wedding, they borrowed from four loan apps to cover the gap, and then took two more loans to repay the first ones. Within three months, the apps were calling up to a dozen times a day. Instead of borrowing again, she listed all six loans, found that two apps were not linked to any regulated lender and reported them, and asked for help negotiating with the remaining lenders. The process took time, and her credit score was affected by the settled accounts, but the calls stopped and she had one clear monthly budget again.

Every situation is different, and results depend on the lender and your circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to visit an office to get help in Surat?

No. Payday Rescue works with borrowers across India by phone, WhatsApp and email, so you can get help from Surat without travelling. Just keep your loan details and any messages from lenders ready.

Can a loan app send police to my house in Surat for non-payment?

Not paying a loan on time is generally a civil matter, and a lender's recovery process must follow the law. Threats of police action or arrest made by recovery agents are often used to scare borrowers. If you get a notice, check whether it is genuine and take advice before responding.

Will settling my loan app debt affect my CIBIL score?

Yes. A settled loan is usually reported as "settled", which can lower your score and affect future borrowing for some time. That is why it is worth comparing settlement with a repayment plan before deciding.

What should I do first if the recovery calls are unbearable?

Start recording the details of each call, inform the lender's grievance officer in writing, and report threats or messages to your contacts on cybercrime.gov.in or by calling 1930. Then make a plan for the debt itself, so the calls have a reason to stop.
