Missed an EMI? What Are My Options? 8 Practical Choices and What to Do This Week

Updated: 4 days ago
A missed EMI feels like the start of something much bigger. It does not have to be. What you do in the next few days matters far more than the missed payment itself. Here is what happens after you miss an EMI in India, and the eight realistic options you have, from the easiest to the most serious.
What happens after a missed EMI
Charges: a bounce or late fee and penal charges. Since 2024, RBI rules say penal charges must be reasonable and cannot be added to your interest rate or compounded.
Reminders and recovery calls, which escalate the longer the EMI stays unpaid.
Credit reporting: overdue accounts are reported to credit bureaus and your CIBIL score drops.
Classification: lenders flag accounts as SMA-0 (up to 30 days overdue), SMA-1 (31 to 60 days) and SMA-2 (61 to 90 days). After 90 days the loan is generally treated as a non-performing asset (NPA).

Your 8 options
1. Pay as soon as you can
If the problem was a one-off delay, pay the EMI plus charges immediately. A payment made within a few days does far less damage than one that crosses 30 days.
2. Call and write to your lender
Explain what happened and when you can pay. Ask whether they can waive the bounce charge or accept a partial payment now. Confirm anything agreed by email.
3. Change the EMI date
If your salary now arrives later in the month, many lenders will move the due date. See salary delayed and EMI due.
4. Ask for an extension or restructuring
A longer tenure reduces the EMI. A short payment holiday may be possible after job loss or illness. These are at the lender's discretion, so apply in writing with proof. Our guide on asking for more time includes what to say.
5. Consolidate, carefully
If your credit score is still decent, a single lower-interest loan can replace several expensive ones. It only helps if your total monthly outgo actually falls. Compare in EMI consolidation vs loan settlement.
6. Use savings or sell an asset, not a loan app
Breaking a fixed deposit or selling something you do not need costs less than an instant loan at very high effective interest. Borrowing from one app to pay another is how small gaps become big debts.
7. Settle, if the hardship is long-term
If you cannot pay the full amount in any realistic timeframe, a written settlement with the lender ends the default for less than the total due. It affects your CIBIL score, so treat it as a serious option, not a first step. Read loan settlement in India: the legal process.
8. Get help early
A short conversation with a debt adviser can show you which of these options fits, before penalties and recovery pressure pile up.
Options at a glance
Option | Best when | Credit impact |
Pay quickly / date change | One-off delay | Low |
Extension / restructuring | Income fell but you can repay in full over time | Moderate |
Consolidation | Several costly loans, score still decent | Low to moderate |
Loan settlement | Long-term hardship, already in default | High, but ends the default |
What not to do
Do not ignore calls and letters completely. Silence pushes lenders towards legal steps.
Do not ignore a legal notice, arbitration notice or Lok Adalat notice. See legal notice from a loan app: real vs fake.
Do not cancel an auto-debit (e-NACH) mandate without talking to the lender; a dishonoured mandate has its own consequences. See e-NACH bounce: what to do.
Do not take a new instant loan to cover the EMI.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I miss one EMI?
You will usually be charged a bounce or late fee and penal charges, and the missed payment can be reported to credit bureaus, lowering your CIBIL score. Paying quickly and talking to your lender limits the damage.
When does a loan become an NPA?
A loan is generally classified as a non-performing asset when an EMI remains overdue for more than 90 days.
Can I ask my bank to reduce my EMI?
Yes. You can request a longer tenure, a due-date change or restructuring. Approval is at the lender's discretion, so make the request in writing with proof of your changed income.
Should I take another loan to pay my EMI?
Usually not. Borrowing from a loan app or another lender to pay an EMI often creates a debt cycle. Consolidation at a lower interest rate can help only if it reduces your total monthly outgo.
