Drowning in Debt and Unable to Pay EMIs? A Calm, Step-by-Step Way Out

Updated: 4 days ago
When EMIs take most of your salary, every phone call feels like a threat and every month feels like a trap. Many people in this position borrowed for good reasons: a medical bill, a family need, a job loss, a business that slowed down. The way out is rarely one big move. It is a series of small, deliberate steps. Here they are.
If the stress feels unmanageable, please talk to someone you trust today. In India you can call Tele-MANAS, the free national mental health helpline, on 14416 at any time. Debt can be fixed; you matter more than any loan.
Step 1: Stop the debt from growing
The single most important step is to stop borrowing to repay. New loan apps, credit card cash withdrawals and informal loans add fresh charges to an already heavy load. Uninstall loan apps you no longer use and revoke their access to your contacts and photos.
Step 2: Put every debt on one page
For each loan or card, write down the lender, outstanding amount, EMI, interest or fees, due date, days overdue and whether there is any legal notice. Seeing the full picture is uncomfortable, but it is the only way to make good decisions. Many lenders treat EMIs above roughly half of take-home pay as a warning sign; if you are above that, you need a plan, not more willpower.
Step 3: Protect the essentials
Rent, food, utilities, school fees, medicines and travel to work come first. Lenders cannot recover anything if you lose your job or home. Work out what is genuinely left after essentials: that is your repayment capacity.
Step 4: Prioritise your debts
Secured loans (home, vehicle, gold), because the asset is at risk.
Any account with a legal notice, arbitration, cheque bounce complaint or court date.
The most expensive unsecured debts: instant loan apps, payday loans and credit cards.
Lower-cost personal loans and family loans.
Step 5: Talk to your lenders before they talk to you
Write to each lender, explain what changed, attach proof (termination letter, medical bills, salary slips) and propose what you can pay. Ask about restructuring, a longer tenure or a short payment holiday. Lenders deal with hardship every day; a borrower who communicates is treated very differently from one who disappears. If you have already missed payments, read missed EMI: what are my options.
Step 6: Choose the right way out
Restructuring or a payment plan, if you can repay everything over a longer period.
Consolidation, if your credit score still allows a cheaper loan that genuinely lowers your monthly outgo.
Loan settlement, if full repayment is not realistic. You pay an agreed reduced amount and the account is marked Settled. See how to settle multiple loan apps and loan settlement in India.
Step 7: Deal with recovery calls calmly
You can tell callers you are working on a written plan and ask them to communicate by email. Agents must not threaten you, call outside 8 am to 7 pm, or contact your family or office to shame you. If they do, use our recovery agent harassment help guide.
Step 8: Rebuild
Once accounts are closed or settled, collect every no-dues certificate, check your credit report, and build a small emergency fund before taking any new credit. A secured credit card used lightly and paid in full can rebuild your score over 12 to 24 months.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do if I cannot pay any of my EMIs?
Stop taking new loans, cover essential living costs first, list every debt, and write to each lender explaining your situation. Then choose between restructuring, a payment plan or settlement based on what you can realistically pay.
Which debt should I pay first?
Protect essentials first, then secured loans such as home or vehicle loans, then any account with a legal notice or court date, then the most expensive unsecured debts such as loan apps and credit cards.
Is it possible to get out of debt without paying the full amount?
Yes, through a written settlement in which the lender accepts less than the total due. It lowers your credit score, so it is best used when full repayment is not realistic.
