Pune is a city of young professionals, students and families who keep the economy moving, from the IT parks of Hinjewadi and Kharadi to the industrial belts of Chakan and Pimpri-Chinchwad. It is also a city where instant credit is a tap away. If you are dealing with payday loan and loan app debt in Pune, whether it is one overdue app loan or several, this guide explains your rights, how to handle recovery pressure, where to complain locally and how to work towards a settlement or repayment plan you can manage.

You are not the first person in Pune to face this, and there is a clear way forward. The key is to replace panic with a plan.

Why loan app debt builds up so fast in Pune

The pattern is similar across most cities, but a few things make Pune borrowers especially exposed:

  • Large student and fresher population. Many people move to Pune for college or a first job, often without a credit history, and app loans are the easiest credit available.

  • Variable incomes. Contract roles, notice periods, gig work and delayed joining dates can leave a gap between expenses and salary.

  • Rent and deposits. Moving costs and security deposits in areas like Wakad, Baner or Viman Nagar can push people to borrow small amounts quickly.

  • The borrowing cycle. Short tenures and high charges mean many borrowers take a second app loan to repay the first, then a third. Our guide on settling multiple loan apps with a practical plan explains how to break this cycle.

Your rights as a borrower, wherever you live in Pune

RBI's fair-practice and digital lending rules apply to banks and NBFCs, and to the loan apps that work with them, regardless of the city:

  • Recovery calls should be made only between 8 am and 7 pm.

  • Agents must not abuse, threaten, publicly humiliate or harass you, your family or your contacts.

  • For digital loans, the lender should tell you in advance which recovery agent has been assigned to your account.

  • You should receive a Key Fact Statement (KFS) showing the APR and all charges, and fees not mentioned in the KFS cannot be charged later.

  • RBI has issued updated recovery directions for banks and NBFCs, effective 1 January 2027, that list banned practices such as persistent calling and posting borrowers' details on social media.

If an app is not linked to any RBI-regulated lender at all, it may be operating illegally. RBI publishes a directory of digital lending apps that regulated lenders have reported, which you can use to check whether an app is linked to a regulated entity.

Step-by-step plan for Pune borrowers

Step 1: Pause new borrowing

Do not take another app loan to repay an existing one. Every new loan adds charges and another set of recovery calls.

Step 2: List every loan and its lender

For each loan, note the app, the NBFC or bank behind it (from your KFS or agreement), the amount received, the amount demanded and the due date. This becomes your master list for complaints and negotiation.

Step 3: Protect your data and contacts

Revoke contact, photo and storage permissions for loan apps in your phone settings. Save your loan documents first. Warn close family calmly that they may get calls and should not share information or pay anyone.

Step 4: Keep evidence

Screenshot threatening messages and log calls with date, time and number. Evidence matters for every complaint route.

Step 5: Talk to the lender in writing

Email the lender's grievance officer. Explain your situation, ask for a statement of account, and propose what you can realistically pay. Keep all communication in writing.

Where to complain in Pune

Different problems go to different places. Use the right route:

  • Threats, extortion, morphed photos or messages to your contacts: call the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in. You can also approach your local police station or the cyber police station of Pune City Police or Pimpri-Chinchwad Police, depending on where you live. Pune's cyber police have acted against loan app extortion rackets in the past, including arrests in 2022 in a case where a woman was threatened with misuse of her personal data.

  • Unfair recovery or charges by a regulated lender: complain first to the lender's grievance officer. If there is no reply within 30 days, or the reply is unsatisfactory, escalate to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in, if the lender is covered by the scheme.

  • Suspected fraud calls or messages (no money lost yet): report through the Chakshu facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal.

Settlement or repayment: what makes sense?

Once the immediate pressure is under control, decide how to deal with each loan:

  • Repay in full where you can, starting with the smallest or most aggressive lender, to remove a source of pressure and protect your credit history.

  • Ask for a repayment plan where you can pay in instalments over a few months.

  • Negotiate a one-time settlement where the amount demanded is beyond what you can realistically pay. A settlement can reduce the total you pay, but it is usually reported to credit bureaus as "settled" and affects your CIBIL score for some time.

Whatever you agree, get it in writing before you pay, pay only into the lender's official account, and collect a no dues certificate or closure letter afterwards.

Build a budget that actually works

A settlement or repayment plan only works if the numbers hold up month after month. Before you commit to any amount with a lender, sit down with your last three months of bank statements and work out:

  • Fixed essentials: rent, PG or hostel fees, electricity, mobile, commute and groceries.

  • Family commitments: money you send home or support you give to parents or siblings.

  • Existing EMIs: any bank loan, credit card minimum due or consumer durable EMI you must keep paying.

  • A small buffer: even a modest amount set aside each month stops one surprise expense from pushing you back to an app.

Whatever is left after these is what you can safely offer lenders. It is better to offer a smaller amount you can keep paying than a larger one you will miss in the second month. Missing a negotiated plan can undo the goodwill you have built and restart recovery pressure.

Questions to ask before you agree to any plan

  • Is the offer from the regulated lender itself, on its letterhead or official email?

  • Does it state the exact amount, the payment dates and the account to pay into?

  • Does it say what happens to penal charges and interest once you start paying?

  • Will the lender issue a no dues certificate or closure letter once you finish?

If the answer to any of these is unclear, ask for it in writing before you pay.

An illustrative Pune scenario

Illustrative example (not a real client): Sneha, a 24-year-old analyst in Hinjewadi, took three small app loans during a two-month gap between jobs. By the time her new salary started, the amounts demanded had grown and one app had started messaging her college friends. She stopped borrowing, revoked app permissions, filed a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in about the messages, and wrote to each lender's grievance officer. She cleared the smallest loan from her first salary and asked the other two for written settlement offers. Her situation took a few months to resolve, but the harassment stopped being the thing that controlled her day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get loan app debt help in Pune without visiting an office?

Yes. Payday Rescue works with Pune borrowers remotely over phone, WhatsApp and email, from the first consultation through to closure letters.

Where do I file a cyber complaint against a loan app in Pune?

Call 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in. You can also approach your local police station or the cyber police station of Pune City Police or Pimpri-Chinchwad Police, depending on your area. Keep screenshots and call logs ready.

Will settling a loan app debt affect my CIBIL score?

Yes. A settled account is usually reported as "settled", which affects your CIBIL score and may make new credit harder to get for a while. Full repayment is better for your score where it is affordable.

What if the loan app is not RBI registered?

Check whether the app is linked to a regulated lender using RBI's directory of digital lending apps and your loan documents. If it is not, do not share more data, keep evidence and report threats to 1930 or the police.
