When money runs out a week before salary day, an instant payday loan app can look like the easiest answer. Approval takes minutes and no one asks many questions. But short-term loans with high fees and steep overdue charges are how many borrowers end up in a cycle of borrowing from one app to repay another. Before you borrow, look at these safer options.

Why payday loans get expensive so quickly

Payday and instant loan apps often deduct processing and platform fees upfront, charge high interest for very short terms, and add charges quickly once a payment is missed. A small loan can grow fast if it is rolled over or repaid late. Read the real cost of a ₹10,000 payday loan to see how.

Safer alternatives to consider

  • Salary advance from your employer: many employers will advance part of your salary, sometimes at no cost. Some offer earned wage access, which lets you draw wages you have already earned before payday.

  • Overdraft or credit line from your bank: if your salary account has an overdraft facility, the cost is usually far lower than a payday app.

  • Credit card EMI or limit you already have: converting a necessary purchase to EMI can be cheaper than a payday loan, as long as you pay the card bill in full and on time.

  • Gold loan from a bank or regulated NBFC: secured loans against gold usually carry much lower rates than unsecured instant loans.

  • Loan against a fixed deposit: if you have an FD, borrowing against it is typically cheap and avoids breaking it.

  • Personal loan from a bank or RBI-regulated NBFC: for larger needs, a regular personal loan with a longer tenure is usually more affordable than repeated payday loans.

  • Family or friends: an interest-free loan with a clear written repayment plan can be the least stressful option.

  • Negotiating the bill itself: ask your landlord, school or hospital for a short extension or instalment plan before borrowing at all.

How to compare the real cost of any loan

  1. Ask for the Key Fact Statement, which regulated digital lenders must provide, and look at the annual percentage rate (APR), which includes fees.

  2. Check how much will actually be credited after deductions, and the exact total you must repay.

  3. Read the late payment and penal charges before you accept.

  4. Confirm the lender, or the bank or NBFC behind the app, is regulated. Here is how to check if a loan app is RBI approved.

Red flags to avoid

  • Apps that demand access to your contacts, photos or gallery.

  • No clear lender name, Key Fact Statement or loan agreement.

  • Money credited without you applying. See what to do if a loan app credits money without your consent.

  • Very short terms with large upfront deductions.

  • Pressure to take a new loan to repay an existing one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to borrow money until payday in India?

A salary advance from your employer or an overdraft on your salary account is usually the cheapest. Loans against gold or a fixed deposit from a bank are also typically far cheaper than instant payday loans.

Are instant loan apps safe?

Some are run by RBI-regulated banks and NBFCs, while others are illegal. Check the lender behind the app, ask for the Key Fact Statement, and avoid apps that demand access to your contacts or photos.

How do I compare the cost of two loans?

Compare the annual percentage rate (APR) in the Key Fact Statement, the amount actually credited after fees, and the total repayable, including late payment charges.

What should I do if I already have several payday loans?

Stop taking new loans to repay old ones, list every loan with its outstanding amount, and seek a structured plan or settlement before the charges grow further.
